The idea for a roof-converted camper took shape in 2019 after eight months touring Europe in a 110 Defender. 

From the Australian summer heat to –32°C in the European Alps, I have experienced the limits of traditional rooftop tents. The concept for sustained, all-weather off-road travel needed to be explored. Vans had the comfort, but compromised on off-road ability. I began thinking about how to combine both.

In a backyard shed, while preparing for a Simpson Desert crossing, I designed and built an all-electric parallel-lift roof conversion with fold-out sides and a king-size bed. The goal was simple: create a system that retains the vehicle’s classic shape and strength, whilst providing genuine liveable space in harsh conditions. That first prototype became the foundation of Headspace Campers.

Today, we continue refining and building roof conversions for a range of touring platforms — designed for those who want to travel remotely, without compromising capability or comfort.
