OUR STORY.

The idea of entering the world of manufacturing campers surfaced back in 2019 after eight months touring Europe in a Land Rover Defender and sleeping in a hard-shell roof top tent.

I’m Oliver, founder of Headspace Campers. This is my story.

I had previously done a bit of touring across Australia in a soft-shell roof top tent and quickly realised it wasn’t withstanding the conditions I often found myself in! My later experience in the hard-shell RTT was similar in that I struggled to stay alive during the -32°C cold snap I experienced while camping in the Austrian Alps. The third option was to buy a van, but with the limited overlanding potential of even a 4x4 model, I yearned for a more functional off-road camper that my partner and I could take just about anywhere, while also providing a level of comfort that I had not previously experienced.

This journey consequently started like many others, in a backyard shed when I was planning a trip to the Simpson Desert following my European adventure and hoping to build the ultimate roof conversion for my Land Rover Defender. I ended up with an all-electric, parallel lift system with fold out sides and a bed base capable of fitting a king-size mattress. While the design proved to be a success on several trips away, it became too costly to bring to market with my limited capital. So, for the time being, I have reverted to the simple hinge design you see advertised here today. In saying that, I love tinkering in my workshop, and I have no doubt the parallel lift system will be a hit once it comes to fruition. Stay tuned!

Believe it or not, there’s a meaning behind our name aside from the obvious ‘headspace’ you gain in our roof conversions. While we share our passion for designing the ultimate camper with our growing community of adventurers, we also want to share the importance of a positive headspace and encourage everyone to take the time to not only check in on themselves, but also their family, friends and even strangers. We believe that surrounding ourselves in nature has a profound impact on our mental state. Our ability to connect with others increases when we’re in a positive headspace.
